All the others in on the scam had walked away: Beans, Nemos, the Paytriot Shitbox, Preying Insect.
It's an example of the fake news ginning up a non-existent or miniscule fringe group with no finances, little or no web presence, no corporate or academic support and no fixed membership. It's a useful stand in for the delusional search for right-wing extremists, just like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
QAnon folks coined and used the term themselves. It was ubiquitous in their memes, forums, videos, in social media, posters, flags, etc, and was accepted by all for years. Hell, the FR official Q thread was named QANON until it changed in 2019. Maybe the Q folks could come up with a symbol, like Prince. Call it “The movement formerly known as QAnon”.
