You should never leave a family member alone at a hospital. Nurses get distracted and make mistakes that can kill or cripple a patient.
Having someone there to run screaming to the nurse station saying that the patient is in distress might save their life.
Otherwise, you can do little things to make them more comfortable.
Most hospitals I have been in, as a patient and as a family member, made provision to allow for this. At least one provided a bed. In the rest, you had to sleep in uncomfortable chairs.

Those days are long gone. Patients are left to fend for themselves under CoVid rules.

By the way, who made the CoVid rules for the hospitals?

Hospital administrators? Anthony Fauci? Who?

I came into my Mothers hospital room in Nashville in the 80s and caught an attendant smacking her in the face while she was delirious from medication. Hell came to the hospital that night.
