I used to have to check worker status (I worked with contractor licensing) to make sure workers on the job site were either legal employees or carried their own sub license. Names and S.S. numbers were required if they claimed to be employees. I was once given a bunch of numbers that obviously were not legit. Someone coming in from Mexico or Guatemala would not have a S.S. number for being born in the Northeast. I told this to my boss. Was anything done? Nope I was told just to file it away.

I also believe one big way to prevent the cheap labor express besides acting like the border is a border is to stop over-regulating businesses so that wages don’t have to be stagnant in order to meet the cost of regulations.
