Right now there are four Mexican gents fixing my carport roof. I am amazed by the work ethic shown by these four men, they don’t chit chat, they don’t stand idle and smoke, they just work. My roof is going to get done today, weeks ahead of schedule by four men who barely speak any English. The jobs were there and they saw an opportunity and I hope they get paid well for their labors.
For the record I’m 60 with health issues and had to hire this job out, I’m not lazy, just grateful there are still hard working men in this country.
That sounds like the sort of people featured on the hit reality TV show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”.
A lot of Southerners like to bitch that Deliverance has given the South a bad image.
There’s MUCH newer stuff than that, and it’s not fiction.
No unions in Virginia and the highway department is just as bad.

There wasn’t anything being sold for 2 months, no work to manage. Unclear goals. Given responsibilities that wasn’t paid for. Working 16 hour days on installs, no overtime pay. I Gave ideas to generate work constantly, only to be mocked saying they aren’t efficient. Then management would use my ideas and take credit.

There is little doubt they are hard workers. That is one thing I miss about Texas. Some are very skilled and many are very pleasant people. The group that did our yard were all from somewhere south of the border and were no nonsense about it as well as courteous and thoughtful. So were the brick layers, concrete crew and painters we hired to prep the house for sale. These are the people who work in Texas and other places.
Be careful though, recognize your risk, if injured on your property they can become desperate and with nowhere else to turn can be easily encouraged to turn on you with the help of some pettifogging lawyer. The lawyers lurk in emergency rooms looking for just such an opportunity. If you fall victim to this it can ruin you. I know of at least two cases where it has with one pending. A liability policy big enough to put a decent sized bump in front of you can help to manage risk although I’ve wondered what weasel words would be used against you for the injured contractor not having workmen’s comp. It is common for people to hire others without workmen’s comp.
When we built our last house in Texas I specifically, intentionally and gladly paid a contractor and deeded him the property during construction. I was even more glad I did when a workman let a saw get away from him and sliced through his boot into the top of his foot. I only learned about it from the bloody boot nailed to a tree. That kind of reminder passes for a safety program I guess.

In my experience, a lot of Mexican-Americans have a great work ethic. And a surprising percent speak mostly Spanish, which is all they need to be able to speak in the SW (like Arizona, where I live). It certainly isn’t 100% and I’ve met white guys with a solid work ethic.
Where I live, lots of Spanish-speaking Hispanics are here legally. And of course, there are also illegals.
I’d gladly do a swap: Let a hard-working Mexican come to America if, in return, we could deport an America-hating liberal white commie yankee in return!
I had a two decks built, windows replaced, door frame redone by a carpentry crew that was truly superior in their workmanship. Fixed price, yet they would not hesitate to spend extra time (hour) getting a joint “just right”, atthough I couldn’t see the flaw in the original one. None of the leaving because it was 4 PM or disappearing for half the afternoon at long lunches. Didn’t want to stop for lunch at all until I insisted upon it. And cost overall was one quarter of the local big name contractors.
I’m sure not all Mexican work crews are that good but this one was.
