Nets guard Kyrie Irving will still cash in on the 2021-22 NBA season, despite not being a part of the team.
On Tuesday, Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks said Irving will not play or practice with the Nets until eligible under New York’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate.
However, Irving will still earn his salary for away games, Marks said. The All-Star guard, though, will not be paid for games missed in New York — 41 at Barclays Center and two at Madison Square Garden — due to New York’s COVID-19 mandate.
Brooklyn is unable to hold Irving’s pay for away games missed because the decision that he will not play was made by the team.
According to Netswire, that will come out to approximately $19 million.

I hope he doesn’t have to pay NY taxes on the salary.
Good work if you can find it. I hope Uncle Drew stands his ground.
Get paid $19M to play ZERO games this season? Kyrie might do it. The Nets are in a rough spot because (a) they need Kyrie at PG, (b) Kyrie will technically still be on the roster, preventing the Nets from acquiring another player, and (c) while they save the salary they would have paid him, the luxury tax calculation would still use his full salary (a NBA suspension is a different matter). If they could have gotten a write-off for his lost salary, the Nets would have saved about $60M on their luxury tax bill this season, far more than his potential lost salary of $15M.
What’s happening right now is significant. I promise you The System is scared. We’re FINALLY seeing real pushback from parts of the country The System didn’t expect. This will catch on. Cheer for Kyrie Irving. And Southwest Airlines pilots. They’re starting something. https://t.co/w1MM6dpuiV— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) October 12, 2021
Probably not. The way the NBA is structured, players are taxes by the state/county/city they play their games in. So, a road game in Texas or Florida would result in $0 state taxes for those games. Since all of his games in NY would be unpaid, NY would collect $0 from Kyrie for the Nets' homes games (plus the two away-games at the Knicks).
*taxed
Perhaps the reason that he is banned is because where all others have been vaccinated and have compromised their vascular systems, he has not.
If he were to play he would run circles around these myocardially challenged sheep.
Kuddos to this lone wolf.
MSM this morning said he could be up for $16 Million in fines.
Sounds way off.
Yeah, but this was ‘reported’ on Good Morning America.
