People confuse covid with something like the flu. Covid can only mutant 1 nucleotide at a time, whereas something like the flu can mutate its entire spike protein. Covid cannot mutate as fast as the covid industrial complex wants it to.

With 61% of the population vaccinated there have been more COVID deaths this year then the last year’s total. First couple of months were slow last year, but we are not finished with this year either.

So, the comparison is close.
