The ratings for the premiere of the newest season of Saturday Night Live suffered a massive implosion from those from last year.
According to a Nielsen Ratings report, SNL garnered only 4.9 million viewers for the beginning of its 47th season, a massive drop from the 8.2 million viewers the show had for its premiere in 2020.
SNL saw similar drops when the ratings were broken down by demographic. Among viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the show saw a 47% drop from the year previous, while viewership dropped by 50% among viewers between the ages of 18 and 49.
The premiere show was hosted by popular actor Owen Wilson and featured Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves as the musical guest. The cold open to the show mocked the political in-fighting between Democratic politicians trying to pass two massive spending bills, and even jabbed at the hypocrisy of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) who partied with rich celebrities at the Met Gala while criticizing the rich.
The show, which is decidedly left-leaning, has been criticized over the years for some of its political jokes. Cast member Michael Che was accused of being "trans-phobic" for a joke he told during the "Weekend Update" news segment of the show in February. The show was also forced to fire cast member Shane Gillis in 2019 after some online outrage over insensitive comments he made while a guest on podcast years earlier.
SNL might see a ratings bump next weekend when Kim Kardashian West hosts and Halsey performs as the musical guest.
True
Hard to believe it’s still on after 47 years and Lorne Michaels is still alive producing it. Michaels is probably the problem, he should have left years ago and turned the show over to someone else. No doubt he would like to make it to 50 years as producer which I assume will be a record.
Whatever creativity Lorne had is gone and only his biased liberalism is left. I am sure the show is a big moneymaker for NBC but it’s time for a big change at producer. Unless Lorne has a lifetime contract!
Second City was consistently better and Fridays was pretty good.
Kids In the Hall, too.
I still chuckle at the one with Mike Tyson on “Love Connection”. And “Wanda” on “The Dating Game”.
SCTV channel. They were far better the SNL by far.

"I won't date just any girl around... 'Cause Patsy has the largest breasts in town!"
Exactly. I was 15 when this show premiered. One of us has aged well; the other not
Yeah, been a good 30 years since I watched these losers.
SNL is a full-employment program for unfunny comedians and their writers. Some of there episodes could pass for a news report on CNN.
Comedy is dead. The funniest stuff is online meme’s from relatively anonymous people and the comments sections of Youtube. Of course the Left is shutting the comments sections down in a lot of places because they can’t debate, take criticism of duel with comedic barbs at twenty paces.

"Hated it!" LOL!
I gave up in the mid 80s
Saturday Night Live will have to reach abysmal numbers before it gets cut.
-It's a cheap show to produce
--skits with no real cost in props
--the regular cast are wannabe or failed comedians who will work for union scale for one show per week
--the visiting celebrities are willing to do it for free, or even pay to be there in order to promote their current movie
--the visiting musical act is willing to do it for free, or even pay to be there in order to promote their new album
-It's on Saturday so it's competing in the time slot against reruns of Columbo and infomercials.
Color me “Shocked!”
