The press release also said there would be no further comment from the WHL or Prince Albert Raiders.
WHL Commissioner Ron Robison apologized Sunday for an “insensitive and offensive” Prince Albert Raiders alternate team jersey unveiled just two days before.
The image on the jerseys appeared to be based on a previous team logo introduced in 1982, which depicted an Arabian raider character holding a sword and a hockey stick.
“On Friday night the Prince Albert Raiders unveiled an alternate third jersey, which was inspired by a highly successful era in Club history,” Robison said in a statement.
“We recognize the dated design is insensitive and offensive. After consultation with the Prince Albert Raiders, this uniform and brand will be discontinued effective immediately. On behalf of the WHL and the Prince Albert Raiders, we regret this uniform design was approved and sincerely apologize for any harm it may have caused.”
There was considerable backlash over the jersey, especially on social media sites like Twitter.
The only thing missing in this sketch is a flying head.
Insensitive? Maybe. Stupid looking? Definitely.
Don’t give them any ideas. They could behead three at a time.
I don’t see how any adult could not have foreseen a problem with this logo.
“I don’t see how any adult could not have foreseen a problem with this logo.”
Explain to the folks at home what the problem is.
Hassan Chop!
At least they don’t have Prince Albert in a can.
I just don’t see an Arab on ice skates....
Like an Eskimo riding a Camel.
Thanks!
A half century ago, even the cartoons had content suitable for adult consumption. Today, in the age of Political Correctness, absolutely every aspect of adult life is subject to being 'dumbed down', to a level acceptable to cantankerous two-yearolds...
I was born in SK, and the Raiders WHL TEAM have been popular the last 4 decades or so. They had more “violent” logos back before the internet then LOL plus there is a lower junior hockey league called the SK Junior Hockey League, and they dont care much about what you think about them bec. their fanbase spans generations.
Yeah when I think of the prairies of Saskatchewan and ice hockey a middle eastern arab come to mind. /sarc
Imperial Valley College in Imperial, Calif. is also doing away with their team name the Arabs and retiring its mascot Omar the Arab, a sword-carrying Arab horseman riding a galloping steed. Several years ago, the school tried rebranding itself the Desert Raiders, but Arab-Americans protested and the name Arabs was restored. But the wokesters finally prevailed, and now, they’re searching for a more politically correct name.

Have an open mind. Recall the Last Saskatchewan Pirate;

“Like an Eskimo riding a Camel.”
The logo wasn’t riding one either. But I can’t see a camel on ice skates.

So which rich, white, liberal kid, living at home, got his panties in a bunch this time?
“Thinking at all and telling the truth is “hate” and “insensitive”.
It’s just a sporting event. It appears that every time you do something it enrages someone.
There are around 31.5 million people claiming US citizenship. What is going to happen to the leprechaun and the fighting Irish of Notre Dame?
And there will be he(( to pay when it is discovered that the Nittany Lions really exist? Here comes PETA. Better clean up your language.

And the team motto: “I keel you!”
I think every boy born between the onset of the telephone and the decline of pipe smoking (or smoking in general) must know the routine:
EMPLOYEE: (Telephone of smoke shop or store rings): Hello?
KID: Do you have any Prince Albert in a can?
EMPLOYEE: Yes. We do...
KID: Well, you better let him out, then!
Hahahahaha...I am sure every single one of them had heard it a gazillion times and maybe even done i it themselves...
Sometimes, as you giggled and hung up the phone, if you listened closely, you could hear the monotone drone of the employee saying "...prank calling is punishable by..." as it slammed into the hook!
Such a childish thing, but it is only fun in a very narrow age group, probably eight to twelve years old perhaps...:)
