The biggest issue is the complete silence of the boyfriend.

I think many people sense that his silence could lead to a hung jury or even no prosecution.

Blunt facts...

She was in a creek in a wilderness area for two weeks before they found her. Proving the time, date, and location of her death will be difficult.

Proving that the boyfriend was present at that time, date, and location will be difficult.

If the local carnivores discovered her body, which seems likely, proving a homicide charge, let alone a murder charge, will be difficult.

If the boyfriend is still alive, 50-50 that he can beat any charge they throw at him, even the debit card charge, since they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the boyfriend did not have permission to use the card.

The video that I saw had Leos erecting a canopy over her on dry ground. Where did you read she was in water?
