The image the family portrayed on TV was that of a large loving Christian family. I’m sure there was selective editing of the filmed footage to portray them in a certain manner. I’m sure Jim Bob had veto power over certain scenes being on TV.
Of course the cameras weren’t running 24/7, and of course things happened which we in TV land never knew about.
