Wow. This news is disturbing. Back in school, I isolated and fixed viruses, sliced samples with a microtome, and examined them with an electron microscope. At least I thought I did. But maybe the microscope was lying to me. It was several decades ago, but the pictures looked like this one with the phages:

You never did.
The process you are describing applies to much larger bacteria and other items of similar size, not viruses. Even to this day, most viruses cannot be seen by electron micrscopy and microtomes are not an appropriate tool (have to use an ultramicrotome). You can't prepare viruses the way you describe. But bacterial and animal/plant cells are prepared using your process.
