What parents with a ONE YEAR OLD set out on a 8.5 mi hike in STEEP terrain in 100+ degree temperatures?
I think heat prostration/stroke is a strong possibility. Otherwise, the toxic algae situation is a strong candidate.
Sad winners of the Darwin award.

Are those the facts?
I'll go with heat.
That would be incredibly stupid.

I think heat prostration/stroke is a strong possibility. And very easy to identify via autopsy.

if heat stroke hit the parents, even one parent, they would sit down to rest...there was no shade....before you know it both parents would be in heat stroke and the baby is right there with them....I'm sure the dog just nuzzled in and stayed there too.....altogether....
I HATE the heat and I wonder why anyone would want to be out in the direct sun under such heat...

It was hot...they stopped for water...didnt notice any algal bloom...many toxins produced by algal blooms...gave water to baby...dog lapped on his own...apparently the area had been closed cause bloom had been seen before...very sad situation any way one looks at it....I guess mother earth ain’t your best friend after all...
