we were both out of the service and
civilians. I told him how for Felony assault on a CHP police officer, I traded that for 6 years in the USAF to not get a felony charge, and everything was dropped.
He was shocked!, they’d let people like me in his AF.
I didn’t bother to tell the asshole I was one of the youngest E-5s in the entire USAF when I left active duty.

The rules also allow for refusing illegal orders but they stack them against you because you are in the crosshairs and it takes a Courts Martial trial to clear you.
What specialness did it take to be “one of the youngest E-5s in the entire AF”? Clean nose and study for the test - possible ass-kisser are some of what I observed in some of the “fast burners”. SSgts are tyro supervisors - if you had become a SNCO leader with a solid record, it would mean something.
I’ll take 1 of the LtCol over 10,000 “super-fast E-5s who quit” any day. Your statement shows that you weren’t around long enough to fully grasp how courageous the man is.
I quit as an E-5 after 5 years. In the WAPS(Weighted Airman performance Something) promotion system it was possible to make E-5 in 3 years. 5% of eligibles were promoted one quarter. The Security Police had a shortage of NCO’s so they made a special case where 50% of them got to E-5 and 6(toughest stripe to earn). It was a corrupt system in the 70’s. No one got promoted without ALL 9’s in their Airman Performance Report(APR). Then there were the written tests. Those that were smarter aced them. In my job they sent a bunch of senior NCO’s to to Mississippi to write up the questions. They were so far removed from the job their questions didn’t match the training manuals.
