So, we cast our net a bit wider, and found a BEAUTIFUL home in a small WV town situated on the Ohio River.
Admittedly, to the locals we may be paying more than the average property taxes in that area - but compared to NY, and nearly all of the PA homes we toured, well, we are DE-LITED.
We have learned that in WV gun laws favor the citizens as they were meant to. Fireworks are legal, which is a thrill for my husband in particular. The town is very small, but tidy. Every account I have dug up on that place always mentions how nice the townsfolk are.
Anyone here that can weigh in on WV/Ohio River Valley region? We are going to be very new to the whole culture there. Retiring very early.
Why no the great republic of Texas?

I grew up in WV, finally came back in 2018 after 37 years.
If your roots are here its always a part of you and you miss it. I tell people I spent part of my professional career scheming to come back. I finally did !
I grew up in eastern panhandle of WV, it has unfortunately become Meth Virginia. I abandoned numerous friends and relatives because I didn’t want my children exposed to that element. If you can find a nice place in the countryside or mountains... Go For It.. I used to ride my bike to Harpers Ferry, Antietam and Gettysburg. First job a a young teen was doing reinactments in the summer. Also took summer trips to Williamsburg for the theme parks at Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion.. Great times.
