My dad, who had some interesting skills that I failed to inherit, could really play pool. One time I watched him get seem to get drunk while playing a much younger guy. The other guy kept winning until it was time to play for serious money. At this point my dad looked to be having trouble standing up but he kept making shots, seemingly by luck or accident.

The young guy couldn’t believe my dad’s ‘luck’ and insisted on playing another game. I naively thought he was as drunk as he looked and practically begged him to take his winnings. But he played the next game and took the guy’s money home. It was the first time I saw a pool hustler in action.

I learned how to play pool at my father’s men’s club when I was little. It was fun.

My grandpa was a pool hustler in his youth. Later, when I was a kid, he would take me out to play pool and beat me by one ball, every single game. I maintain that takes some serious skill.
