I am hoping they replace the current 8 with 4 bigger ones.

it’s 4 in this upgrade. The old layout of 4 twin pods is being changed to 4 big turbofans. More power, better gas mileage and range.

There is a story about the military pilot calling ATC for a priority landing because his single-engine jet fighter was running "a bit peaked." ATC told the fighter jock that he was number two behind a B-52 that had one shut down.

"Ah," the pilot remarked, "the dreaded seven-engine approach!"

Going back some years, there was discussion of reconfiguring B-52’s with 4-6 engines. Improved engine design, technology and fuel mixtures would enable such a change. Not in that loop so that’s the extent of my recamemry.
