Some reasons I've read on the internet are:

• verifying the credit card belongs to you.
• verifying that you are the person who made an internet reservation.

Regarding #2, I've made reservations for family members at airport hotels when they were in flight and storms were canceling connections. That way, my family member doesn't have to deal with the chaos at the terminal and worry about rooms being gone when everyone finally lands.

In that case, I make the reservation in the family member's name, not my own.
