It isn’t really all that complicated. Enormous distances that take millions of years to cross, even at the speed of light. Unless/until the fantasy of traveling through “wormholes” or some other means of much-faster-than-light travel are realized, we’re not meeting, seeing, or even detecting any other intelligent life, and they’re not ever going to be aware of us, either.
