Just suppose for a moment that he was innocent.

He could have panicked when they saw they were making a case on him based on circumstantial evidence and gone to ground.

If he was innocent he should have just lawyered up.

He has a lawyer. His lawyer said that he doesn’t know where his client is either.

Having a lawyer doesn’t mean that he couldn’t help with the investigation. He could always answer some questions, and decline to answer others. He’s not at the point where he needs to plead the 5th.
