if this virus warranted it by killing 30-50% of the people in infected, you would not have to mandate masking, quarantining, and vaccination.
Exactly. In the early days of Covid many of us here advocated a variety of draconian measures because the disease was unknown and potentially could lead to these kinds of numbers.
Once we realized the threat was way overblown, we changed our view.
However, the political leaders were first late to the game and then they got stuck on stupid/evil.
