The family of missing Long Island woman Gabby Petito on Tuesday slammed her boyfriend for stonewalling police and refusing to say where he last saw the 22-year-old — as the search for her continues.
Her family’s statement came just hours after Petito’s boyfriend, Brian Laundrie — who continues to dodge cops — broke his silence, saying through his lawyer that he would “remain in the background.”
Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, and her father, Joe Petito, have both pleaded for her return.
“The Schmidt and Petito family are going through the worst moments of their lives,” according to the statement, posted on Twitter Tuesday by WNBC reporter Pei-Sze Cheng.
“Brian is refusing to tell Gabby’s family where he last saw her,” their statement said. “Brian is also refusing to explain why he left Gabby all alone and drove her van to Florida. These are critical questions that require immediate answers.
“The Schmidt and Petito family beg the Laundrie family to not ‘remain in the background’ but to help find who Brian referred to as the love of his life,” the statement said. “How does Brian stay in the background when he is the one person that knows where Gabby is located.”
The family added that they “implore” Laundrie “to come forward and at least tell us if we are looking in the right area.”
Laundrie and Petito, who lived together in Florida, left on the coast-to-coast trip in July and were due to wrap up the trip at a friend’s home in Portland around Halloween.
But Laundrie returned home to Florida in the 2012 Ford Transit van they were traveling in on Friday — without Petito.
He has since retained an attorney and refused to cooperate with police — who were also rebuffed by Laundrie’s parents.

Possible. But more likely like the Van Der Sloot parents who knew their son did something. Van der Sloot’s father in that case said he has to do everything he can to help his son only. Same deal here.
They should hang, shoot, electrocute, flay, draw, and quarter this bastard. Then they should conduct a complete investigation into that girl’s disappearance to see if any crimes were committed.

No doubt. Anyone who would harm a 110 pound woman in any way is a coward. And not agreeing to provide information to help find her merely says to me that, sadly, he murdered the young woman.
He’s a DESPICABLE MAN from a DESPICABLE FAMILY! Someone upthread said the family’s home and business should be picketed. I agree with that.

Just my opinion but I think she is probably dead at the boyfriend’s hands. I’m the father of three daughters and each one of them have had their relationship ups and downs. My gut tells me if she had just left him after a fight, she would have reached out to her support network for assistance and would already have been home (or to a place of safety) before he had finished driving back to Florida. Her not checking in, the boyfriend driving back alone and without apparently mentioning the split up, lawyering up and not cooperating, etc. are actions just too suspicious not to take note of.
Again, just my opinion, but I think he has lawyered up to protect himself when there is sufficient physical evidence make him a person of interest and, later, a suspect. Having a lawyer would also put him in a position to negotiate a plea deal at an opportune time in exchange for her body location. That would be when the police/detectives/FBI/etc. are unable to find it through normal investigative means. It’s cold blooded as Hell to think this way but, unfortunately, it is the way the real world sometimes operates.
just heard late on Fox that the van is the missing girl’s van, not his.
i suspect Laundrie brought NOTHING to the table in this relationship, a leech.
Maybe she broke up with him and he realized he would have to work/get a job/grow up and he got angry.
In most cases the parents protect their kid, look at Scott Peterson’s parents!
The poor woman was likely pregnant. Killing pregnant girlfriends has become just another form of abortion in some minds. If you thoroughly devalue the life of your own baby, it is not a leap to devalue the life of the baby's mother. Selfishness is too good a name for it, but that emotion is at the root of it.
If they find nothing in the van, he’s free. I am sure there were no witnesses, no CCTV, and her body will never be found.If I was her parent I would be going crazy.
But there’s that “incident” in Utah. Hopefully that leads somewhere. Praying for her parents.
The perp is now in hiding -- either he's returned to the scene of the crime to conceal evidence and/or the body, or, he's hiding in the basement of his parents' house, orrrr, he's been hung out to dry, doesn't want to face the music, and has gone off somewhere and done himself in.a
