Answering the Call
We recently celebrated our thirty-ninth wedding anniversary and we decided to celebrate it by taking a trip to the rocky mountains. When I saw the rugged grandeur of huge rocks from tectonic plates that had pushed up to form these majestic mountains I was in awe of the God of Creation.
Being flat-landers from the mid-west, we camped up in the higher elevations initially, but we started to get altitude sickness so we had to go down to lower altitudes. We were looking for a campground that had a swimming pool and we found one that was in a valley surrounded by mountains. We visited with the owners and learned that sea-bed fossils were easily found and one was even named after the family. We saw game camera pictures of a mountain lion and bear, feeding a mule deer. We were not in our familiar low-land valley of small critters and humid balmy air with lush green grass; we had entered into something with an ancient history and a primitive natural wildlife!
As we visited and swapped stories we learned how their great-grand parents had settled the land and built a home and raised a family; how the original deed to the property was signed by president Glover Cleveland. It was a time when I came to respect the courage and faith of the woman who was one of the owners.
I had been seeking to develop the gifts of the Holy Spirit's power in my life, but was feeling insecure since when I compare myself with others I know I am different; I am handicapped. In my prayer time with God I was given an assurance that as long as I had a pure love for God and people in my heart that God could use His power wisdom and love to work through me, and that there was coming a time when that power was going to be called upon to work in a threatening situation. I answered that I was willing to answer that call when it came; trusting in the power of God to protect me as his beloved daughter. I thought that my mission would involve a dangerous wild animal or a natural risk, being that we were traveling to such a place.
Well, at this campground a situation arose. A man who may have been under the influence of some kind of chemicals came speeding down the dirt road, fishtailed and cutting curves, putting the family of one of the owners in danger as they drove into this oncoming threat. He then came onto the campground property. In the west there is a code: when there is a cattle guard across a road, it is to keep the cows in, and the contemptible out!
As a man who had the right to protect his family, the campground family member confronted the intruder and told him that he was on private property, to respect the speed limit and to leave. This caused the intruder to respond with violence and foul language. The woman who was the owner came in the situation to defend her family and she was assaulted. She told the intruder to leave and in hatred the intruder yelled “you don't respect me as a man” at her!
That was when the awakening of the call came alive in me, it was time to come to the aide of another woman, with the permission of God to enter into a fray of violence, I approached, stopped nearby and asked God for His authority and power to resound in my voice which is usually gentle and sweet; I boomed and said “in the Power and name of Jesus Christ, you back off! You stop this violence now!”
There were other men there who were calling the sheriff and who were using physical force to get him to leave, the power of the uncontrolled substance and insecurity of someone who knew not how to respect himself or God or others was making him act like a dangerous animal! It was only the Name and power of Jesus that stopped his insane rage! When I directed the Word at him, he shook at that force, stopped fighting and got into his car and drove off.
The owner was very upset and shaking from the adrenaline of the incident, so I went over to her and gave her a hug and told her she was an amazingly strong woman and that she was not standing alone. I was standing with her and so was God!
My husband, who was standing off a bit, constantly carries a concealed sidearm lawfully and thought at one point that the intruder may have been going for a gun or other weapon when he reached into the car and was ready to intercede if needed. My husband recorded the incident with his phone for evidence, He came and told me it was time to get out of there in case the man returned; he as a man was protecting his woman, and I respected that and left with him and went to our RV.
After a while I felt led by the Spirit to say a prayer over the situation. I was wearing a prairie dress, as one who came from a pioneer stock, who had the God-given right to find a place where a woman can raise her family in safety and courageously defend it with the power of her God-given love. There was a bright crescent moon shining over the mountains and as the wind whipped at my dress I raised my hands and I prayed:
“Most Holy God and Father, “There has been violence done here tonight, and the family whose generations past have made this land a home, are in the right as children of God and people who have put their blood sweat and tears into this sacred place”. “I call upon your angels to come down and protect us and all who are camping here with your power”. “What this man had done for evil turn it around and work it out for good”. “May the Holy Spirit bring deep conviction in this person's life to cause him to see how the devil is destroying him and give him repentance to run from his wicked ways”. “ Lead him to the point were he turns away from unrighteousness and seeks forgiveness for his sin through Jesus”.
Later, I was thinking about how Jesus left His heavenly home to answer the call of God to pay for the sins of mankind; where only innocent blood could stand between man and God. I was deeply moved with the thought of the power of the love that was flowing down from heaven and God into that valley. Forgiveness and peace and a mothers prayer restored the strongest love and healing, and the story would be told and recounted to younger generations, to God be the honor and glory, Who sits above; the Maker of mountains and men!
Should have just shot him.
Perhaps, then given him a Christian burial.
You did the right thing at the right time. Not all of us are cynics.
I probably would have shot him and then afterwards told the demons to leave in Jesus’s name right back to hell.
I would never be able to stop thinking of him coming back later...if he was not neutralized then. I tend to be very proactive.
Maybe God just spoke to you and it was not the guys time to die and the demon did come out.
Maybe.....oh, I’m just glad it worked out.
