For almost all of 2020 I worked a very public-facing job. Before the COVID BS, it was very common to joke around and have mini-conversations with people as they came and went, and for those people to do the same with each other. This continued even after the lockdowns, when masks hadn't yet been mandated. Once the masks became mandatory, hoever, the change was palpable. People were quiet and somber almost universally. The psychological effect of wearing masks cannot be overestimated.
