Cicero made the famous observation that the greatest threat to a nation comes not from foreigners besieging its walls, but from within. Those that dress, speak and sound no different from loyal, patriotic citizens but hold values and ideas that are not consistent with that nation are the real threat. That KGB agent and his collegues could not hope to succeed unless there already was a significant percentage of the American population ( thoughout all its institutions) who shared their goals and aims.

I couldn’t agree more. I am becoming more disenchanted with our country every day because of it.

A few years ago there was an alien-invasion TV show called "V" in which the aliens behaved very much like the political left. They promised goodies like free health care and presented a cool, sexy image, exemplified by their beautiful female leader.
Although their arrival on earth seemed to have just occurred at the present moment, it turned out that they had been infiltrating human society for many years, masking their alien identity with an artificial human skin, and had penetrated all of our institutions. Their public manifestation was the final step, and their hidden goal was to take possession of the entire earth. They began recruiting humans to be unwitting dupes in carrying out their agenda, and they focused on appealing to youth.
A majority of the public seemed to be taken-in by them, and the minority of protesters received hostile treatment in the press, were regarded as crazed fanatics and conspiracy-theorists, and had to go underground. The show is a great metaphor for what we are seeing today.
