How do you find out you are suddenly in debt?

There’s no good answer until that gets answered because if you borrow to pay it or declare bankruptcy, you may end up being worse off.

First,

Who made the charges? If you and spouse made the charges, you are in deep Kimchee.

It the card was stolen, notify the CC Company and go from there.

Bankruptcy attorneys offer free consultations. You might consider filing Chapter 7 if you qualify. If you don't, i.e., too much home equity or too high of an income, filing a Chapter 13 could still be an option for you.

I wish you the best of luck.

If you have nothing, screw it.
Credit Card is UNSECURED debt.

If you’re over 70, screw it, time is on your side.

Depending on your outlook of the current regime, pay the minimum.
Dollars will continue falling from the sky
OR
Devaluation will be so significant, you’ll be able to pay it off with 4 or 5 $10,000 dollar notes you’ll find inside cereal boxes.

Calculate the interest you will pay each year on the total debt (great APR calculators online), determine the maximum you can pay each month right now over the annual interest divided by 12 months. If you have other debts and that get paid off, take that payment amount and add it to your monthly credit card payments (called snowball payments). If it will take way too long or if you don't have enough monthly income to do this payment method, call a credit debt service who can negotiate with the credit card company to forgive some of the debt and initiate a workable payment plan.

Bankruptcy will require court approval and a lawyer, who has to be paid outside the Bankruptcy judgement. There is no guarantee the Bankruptcy will be approved and it applies to all debts and property held. Liquidation plans are often required to pay a portion of the debt back as a condition of the Bankruptcy (Bankruptcy Plan). You can actually end up in more debt than you started if not planned out well.

Best thing to do is pay the debt off using option one if possible.

1. Too little information.

2. Friends are not whom to ask for advice on such a matter; you risk your choice of solutions getting between your friendships, if/when things recommended by friends don’t work out.

3. You need professional debt solutions advice/help.

My brother had a situation like this with his first marriage when he found out his wife had racked up $1,000s in credit card debt without telling. I think she admitted that so she got stuck with the bill in divorce court and had to file bankruptcy.

I have a co-worker whose husband ran up about $25K in credit card debt. Almost all of it on purchases for himself.

An ex-husband now and a total deadbeat. Unfortunately my co-worker was on the hook for every penny of it and to her credit, she paid it all off.

Part of her strategy was taking on boarders as well as working a second job. That allowed her to make her mortgage payments and use what would have been her mortgage payment to go towards the debt. Downside is that she was almost never home except to sleep and her boarders started acting like it was their house. It was a bit of an adventure getting them to leave the house once she was back on her feet.

Consolidate everything into your mortgage and cut the credit cards up.

Talk to a credit counselor.

Talk to your bank/credit union and try to set up a repayment schedule.

Make certain your spouse is on board with the removal of all but cash-only, no credit spending.

Your best bet is to take the hit to your credit score and try to settle the debt with the lender. But it’s still going to cost you approx 40% of the face value, so about $18K. That you can negotiate on your own. Professional debt managers can get you to 30% of face
