“I bet they both have a father and mother at home.”

My initial thought exactly.

They are clearly being raised right. Very sadly, seldom seen these days.

It was a great time to be associated with the military

We were lucky. We thought good people were running our government. Were we wrong??

Grew up in Indiana in the fifties and when we were riding our bikes if a funeral procession drove by we got off our bikes until it passed. Maybe it’s a Hoosier thing.

When my father died 20 years ago... I was following the car taking his casket to the cemetery...

During the drive, I by chance looked up and saw a young man on the side of the road standing next to his bike with his head bowed and his hat over his heart...

I don’t remember much from that day... but I remember that kind gesture from a young man I never knew...

TY Lord for raising up such people...m

On a military base it is customary (probably mandatory) that you stop what you are doing when the flag is being raised or lowered. Even for non-military people like me.

I was working on a base last year and could barely hear the taps being played (recorded over the loud speaker). I stopped what I was doing even though it was way off in the distance.

I saw military personnel still walking along, so perhaps there is a bit of a judgement call there.

Working at a site in Indonesia they said if you could hear the music as the flag was being taken down - STOP. Face the sound of the music and stand still.

They recounted stories of folks (Americans, Australians) that didn’t stop for the flag ceremony and getting beaten by the Indonesian soldiers.

I forget what movie it was from - but there is a scene where it is getting dark and taps is just about to be played. A bunch of the guys are hurrying, trying to get into a building (mess hall?) before it plays. (Maybe the rule is once you are inside you don’t need to stop and give respect?)

Anyway, the officer slows his pace a bit so he can stop and pay his respect to the flag. With “taps” being played - I wonder if there is an aspect to remembering fallen soldiers during the flag lowering?

Two golfers were out on the course. A funeral procession passed by. The one guy stopped what he was doing, put his hand over his heart and faced the procession in silence.

Once they had passed, his partner said “That was a fine gesture Harry.”

“After 40 years of being married to her I figured it was the least I could do.”
