‘Two truths’ to downtown Seattle living: Vibrant, diverse atmosphere butts up against drug use, street crime
Seattle Times ^ | 9/5/2021 | Sara Jean Green

After moving into a downtown high-rise from the suburbs in 2013 to take advantage of the vibrant atmosphere and walkability of Seattle’s urban core, Ted and Priscilla Tanase are now looking to rent a place on the Eastside to temporarily escape the open-air drug use, lawlessness and filth that’s led them to feel unsafe when they walk out their front door.

“We’re going to live away for a year and see what happens,” said Ted Tanase, 79. “I just need a break from here. We have four adult kids and none of them think it’s safe.”

Haley Mae, a 27-year-old Seattleite who works for a digital marketing company, spent her teen years riding buses along Third Avenue to get to middle school and high school. She’s lived downtown since October and says “it feels the same amount of scary” as it did when she was a kid, though she’s now more aware of her surroundings and avoids walking on Third.

“Growing up, (Seattle) felt really remote. Now, it feels very relevant,” as the city has become wealthier and attracted people from all over to settle here, said Mae, who thinks all downtown residents are experiencing low-level trauma from watching people struggle with homelessness and witnessing others shoot up on the sidewalks. “I wish I knew how to pick up needles safely or that there was a place to put them.”

"Vibrant, diverse atmosphere"

Vibrant is an apt word for what's happening, alright.

Diverse - no comment.

FTA: "Ted and Priscilla Tanase, seen on the rooftop deck of their downtown Seattle high-rise, are looking at at renting a place on the Eastside for a year to get away from the open-air drug use and crime on the streets downtown."

Bet they both vote Democrat!

I went to UW in the early 90’s.

Conservatives were shunned and shamed even then, so it was very diverse as long as you mindlessly parroted the same talking points as everybody else, and did so with that smug tone of unearned self satisfaction as if you are the all wise all knowing oracle spewing “original thoughts” repeated ad nauseum.

"Vibrant, diverse atmosphere"

Diverse means you have a smorgasboard of choices available in illegal (oh, wait they don't enforce the laws there) drugs.

‘Two truths’ to downtown Seattle living: Vibrant, diverse atmosphere butts up against drug use, street crime

Doesn't the drug use, homelessness and street crime actually enhance the diversity of the city?

It’s hard for me to put myself in the mentality of someone who thinks the situation in downtown Seattle could be better next year.

It’s quite obvious that it’s going to get worse on a daily basis for the foreseeable future.

Darn right they vote Democrat. That view of West Seattle cost 2-3 million dollars minimum. East side may be a little rustic for them. These are city people!

We went to church in Seattle every week. We always took food to hand out to the homeless.
This was from oh 95-2008 maybe.

St Spiridon Eastern Orthodox cathedral.

And every week I would hop out and give a sack of easy food (no cooking required) to someone.
Usually talk to them while my ride went around the block.

The homeless were always, always, always from other states.
Had come there for a job, they said.
Said they got beat up in the shelters so they were living on the street. Young men, white, polite, spoke great English.

Anyway that was my experience.

Ha ha. Too bad they don’t move to West Seattle.
Parts of it are extremely vibrant indeed.
White Center cones to mind. Very ethnic. 😂😂

Whoever invented the “diversity” concept couldn’t have devised a more effective weapon for destroying a country. Just import hordes of people whose cultures and beliefs are completely opposed to the foundational principles that are essential to a great nation, then convince the weak-minded that this is a wonderful thing to be celebrated, and finally launch an all-out assault to silence and destroy any sane people who rise up to point out the obvious.

What exactly does “vibrant atmosphere” mean?

“Vibrant, diverse atmosphere” in a city is somewhat akin to “cozy and unique” in real estate.

I used to play racquetball there at the park facility. Very ethnic yes, but for the most part they don’t play racquetball. We used to call White Center “Rat city” and not because of rodents.

Mae, who thinks all downtown residents are experiencing low-level trauma from watching people struggle with homelessness and witnessing others shoot up on the sidewalks.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think the ‘low-level trauma’ is because of watching the struggle with homelessness, but perhaps with the homeless themselves and their habits.
