That’s because in real life they have never been surrender cowards and fought to insane losses and fight bravely. They historically had no more surrenders that the Brits or us or the Germans in WWII. We neverHear the end of Flanders fields, poppies, etc, but in WWI they had far more soldier deaths than the Brits. And today in Europe, their military is the strongest by far.

Right. I don’t have a drop of French blood in me. But I never like to see the French described as “surrender monkeys”. A reading of Battle of Verdun in WW 1 - or of the Battle of Dunkirk in WW 2 - should dispel any doubts about French bravery.
The French Army was much larger than the German one which invaded France in WWII. It didn’t take long for the Germans to subdue the French Army.
