A Raisin in the Sun is a 1961 drama film directed by Daniel Petrie and starring Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Roy Glenn, and Louis Gossett Jr. (in his film debut), and adapted from the 1959 play of the same name by Lorraine Hansberry. It follows a black family that wants a better life away from the city.

Very dramatic. In 67’ our English class read the book.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Mama was right.
This scene right here shows why atheism became so prevalent in America.
Note...the young hip girl offers the *intellectual* argument against God....and all Mama can come back with is a slap in the face and a demand that her daughter toe the line. Woo hoo, you say! Right thinking restored!
But was it?
The audience is left with the impression that despite God being reimposed in the house by force by Mama, *the daughter is right*. It probably resonated with all the young hipsters of the time who were chafing against the rules of their parents born in the early 1900s, without running afoul of the censors.
Sneaky. Insidious.
The author of this play, Lorraine Hansberry, was a Communist and a lesbian. *In the 1950s*. You can bet she wasn’t out to make belief in God look good.
