so 1-2% may not sound like a lot, but it’s a lot

The ‘only’ 1 to 2% different is stated in comparison with the fact that COV1 and COV2 are 22% difference and that did not interfere with immunity- those immune to COV1 were immune to COVID despite 22% difference. Therefore, variants are not the terror they are made out to be. Those who have had Covid should be immune to variants, and where the data differs, we are reminded that the PCR test is incapable of diagnosing who has Covid, who has influenza or pneumonia, or who isn’t sick at all but will henceforth be deemed ‘asymptomatic’ instead of ‘healthy.
I’m not sure where you’re getting your info that those with SARS 1 were immune to SARS2 or sARS 2Delta?
