“Russian Navy? That’s the very least of our worries.”

Probably so, if we don’t try to get too cute with them. Otherwise you don’t want to be in a coastal city when one of their drone submarines lights off a nuke.

LOL...it brought to mind...

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: But this is absolute madness, ambassador. Why should you build such a thing?

AMBASSADOR DESADESKI: There are those of us who fought against it, but in the end we could not keep up with the expense involved in the arms race, the space race, and the peace race. And at the same time our people grumbled for more nylons and washing machines. Our doomsday scheme cost us just a small fraction of what we'd been spending on defense in a single year. But the deciding factor was when we learned that your country was working along similar lines, and we were afraid of a doomsday gap.

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: This is preposterous. I've never approved of anything like that.

AMBASSADOR DESADESKI: Our source was the New York Times.

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: Dr. Strangelove, do we have anything like that in the works?

DR. STRANGELOVE: A moment please, Mr. President. Under the authority granted me as director of weapons research and development, I commissioned last year a study of this project by the Bland corporation. Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent, for reasons which, at this moment, must be all too obvious.

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: Then you mean it is possible for them to have built such a thing?

DR. STRANGELOVE: Mr. President, the technology required is easily within the means of even the smallest nuclear power. It requires only the will to do so.

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: But, how is it possible for this thing to be triggered automatically, and at the same time impossible to untrigger?

DR. STRANGELOVE: Mr. President, it is not only possible, it is essential. That is the whole idea of this machine, you know. Deterrence is the art of producing in the mind of the enemy... the fear to attack. And so, because of the automated and irrevocable decision making process which rules out human meddling, the doomsday machine is terrifying. It's simple to understand. And completely credible, and convincing.

GENERAL BUCK TURGIDSON: Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines, Stainsy.

PRESIDENT MUFFLEY: But this is fantastic, Strangelove. How can it be triggered automatically?

DR. STRANGELOVE: Well, it's remarkably simple to do that. When you merely wish to bury bombs, there is no limit to the size. After that they are connected to a gigantic complex of computers. Now then, a specific and clearly defined set of circumstances, under which the bombs are to be exploded, is programmed into a tape memory bank.

GENERAL BUCK TURGIDSON: Strangelove. What kind of a name is that? That ain't no kraut name, is it, Stainsy?

STAINS: He changed it when he became a citizen. It used to be Merkwurkdigliebe.

GENERAL BUCK TURGIDSON: Hmm. A kraut, by any other name, huh, Stainsy?

DR. STRANGELOVE: Yes, but the... whole point of the doomsday machine... is lost... if you keep it a secret! Why didn't you tell the world, eh?

AMBASSADOR DESADESKI: It was to be announced at the Party Congress on Monday. As you know, the Premier loves surprises.

I have always loved this famous picture, taken from the USS Triton's first circumnavigation of the globe while submerged when they stuck their periscope up off the Philippines and saw this:

Heck, are they doing that so they can come over from Russia and inhabit it?

The point I made rather glibly was, if they are using one of those things, there are going to be a lot of cities with baked in fallout all over the place!

Correct. And they forget who the hell got into space first.

I will never forget the fear of our fearless leaders back then.

Really shook Eisenhower up.

Now that they have slightly different form of government, it is even more dangerous. If that country ever committed to a free capitalistic based economy, they wouldnt have to fight a war to steamroll the world. It'd be over in a couple decades.

Secretly, the Chinese fear the Russians more than us.

Surface fleet? That is so.

Their submarine fleet? Dont kid yourself. It might be smaller than what it used to be, but is is still effective and they have developed a torpedo that can be launched from a very long ways off and does not have to hit the target dead on..a nuclear torpedo.

Ask any submariner from the US Navy what a crazy Ivan is.

My Granddad served 4 combat patrols aboard USS Gato and took depth charges more than once. Water compression from an explosion is no joke. I wouldn’t like to be underwater when a nuke lights off in the water near me. Sounds like a suicide weapon.

Oh, I'm not denigrating what the sardines went through and/or go through. I was ridiculing the language used. What is the purpose of the word "massive" in that headline?

I just remembered our Navy had a nuclear torpedo in the 1950’s. I remember a submariner commenting to me that firing the torpedo at a target would only degrade the capability of the submarine that fired it by 5%. His question was since the sub is underwater and really needed that reactor to work to get to the surface again, which 5% was degraded?

Well it would be a get clean up solution if you wanted to live there.

Use one anywhere, get WWIII.

Our own government is going to sell us out to either the muslims or the Chinese. Count on it.
I think the muslims have the upper hand as they have more people here already and breed like rabbits.
Worst case scenario we get caught between the two in a shoot’em up.

I have no idea what that means. I am currently re-reading a book for perhaps the fourth time because it is so interesting and...yes, even entertaining: "Atomic Accidents: A History of Nuclear Meltdowns and Disasters from the Ozark Mountains to Fukishima by James Mahaffey"

I am a former Nuc Med Tech from long ago, so this is very interesting, discussions about Admiral Rickover and his advocacy of pressurized water reactors over other designs, Nuclear Bombs being accidentally dropped from a B-47 over Georgia (and a crewmember almost riding it down Slim Pickens style!) and I wonder if that "5%" they are talking about is related to nuclear reactor function degradation, crew functionality, sensor functionality...I don't know.

In any case, here is an article describing the test the Navy did back in the 1950's 500 miles off the coast of Southern California: How to Nuke a Submarine

LOL, can you see them doing this today?????? On the positive side, GreenPeace and a bunch of libs might try to get it cancelled by anchoring near the spot.

Resourceful researchers might look at it as an opportunity to study the effects of blast and radiation on human invertebrates...:)

The US would be an awesome place if our demographics matched those in the late 1700’s.

Here’s the thing. The bubbleheads never really know if our own Navy is tracking their position. So it is cool to take photos but in reality that sub was probably a sitting duck for along time also. With sosus and other US subs we pretty much know where they are too.

“The US would be an awesome place if our demographics matched those in the late 1700’s.”

Ain’t that the truth!
What exactly have we done for ourselves by importing/letting in groups of people who can’t or won’t assimilate?
Nothing.

Nothing would be an improvement.

We’re in the far left of the zero point on a number line...
