If the health risks of COVID-19 aren’t enough to drive more people to get vaccinated, what about the cost of treatment — or even health insurance?
In June and July, the estimated costs for treating unvaccinated patients hospitalized for COVID were at least $2.3 billion, according to a recent report by researchers at the Kaiser Family Foundation. In Texas, the total probably surpassed $280 million, although researchers acknowledge the actual burden was probably higher in the state and country.
They estimated that 113,000 preventable hospitalizations occurred nationwide at an average cost of $20,000 a person.

The only “proof” is the clinical trial data. I haven’t done a deep dive but I recall reading lightly that the difference between the drug arm and control arm was not all that great. It was a large trial, and using statistics the greater the n (number of people in the trial) the easier to detect small improvements. So you may have a point, it’s worthy of inspection.
BUT, and WORSE STILL, is that they (at least Pfizer) broke the blind on the clinical trials. After some relatively short period of time, they told the people who were on the placebo arm that they were placebo, and offered them a chance to get the vaccine. That is almost always taboo - double taboo. You don’t tell the placebo they got placebo, and you don’t (generally) let the placebo cross over to the drug arm (there are some exceptions, usually for progressive diseases where the drug appears to work so for ethical reasons you let placebo arm people getting sicker a chance to use the new drug - but afaik never before for vaccines since you can’t vaccinate someone already sick).
So there is a whole lot of fudging that went on.
