With Hurricane Ida intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico Saturday and barreling towards the Gulf Coast, thousands of fleeing residents clogged highways as they raced inland, and the New Orleans airport cancelled all of Sunday's inbound and departing flights.
As of Saturday night, Ida was whipping winds of 105 mph and is about 145 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said that the storm will be 'one of the strongest hurricanes to hit anywhere in Louisiana since at least the 1850s.'
Forecasters predict it could make landfall by Sunday afternoon or Sunday evening as an 'extremely dangerous' Category 4 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale with winds of 140 mph.
It's predicted to cause heavy downpours and a tidal surge that could plunge most of the Louisiana shoreline under several feet of water.
'We’re going to catch it head-on,' Bebe McElroy told the Associated Press as she prepared to leave home in the coastal Louisiana village of Cocodrie. 'I’m just going around praying, saying, "Dear Lord, just watch over us."'

Hurricane #Ida is closing in. Storm surge as high as nine feet is one of the biggest threats along the Northern Gulf Coast.
THIS is what that looks like... 👀 pic.twitter.com/99d864nJ9n— The Weather Channel (@weatherchannel) August 28, 2021
I had to clean up after a hurricane in 1985.
I was military stationed in Biloxi. That was a hard time.
I cleaned up an old graveyard full of giant Oaks. They handed me a chainsaw and said have at it.
We made the best of it. I remember ordering Little Caesars Pizza and actually got 2 pizzas.
Our mess hall was closed. No nothing unless you had cash.
We had no water. Navy brought that in on buffaloes.
It can be rough down there.
The cooks were the best though. (civilian_)
Sounding from S. Mississippi.. shows a relatively conducive environment for tornadoes throughout Sunday-Monday.
Remember: Not only will #Ida bring hurricane winds, storm surge and flooding but also likely will bring several, if not many tornadoes in it's squalls. #mswx pic.twitter.com/SvBDO4KYcA— Weather Track US (@weathertrackus) August 29, 2021
We evacuated out of Beaufort, South Carolina for a hurricane in 1967. Flew our F-4’s to Denver and hunkered down in the Playboy Club.
Rank do have its privileges. :^)
BTW, I would not trade that experience for anything.
The old lady caretaker fed us on the gravestones of Confederates and when we were done there we just drove through the town asking if people needed to be cleaned up.
We were young, so why not. :)
We’ve seen this movie before. Even know how it turns out.

Probably involves a Heineken or two.
They’re the official sponsor.

Let’s see how fast they blame this on dementia joe.
“The old lady caretaker fed us on the gravestones of Confederates and when we were done there we just drove through the town asking if people needed to be cleaned up.”
That there is as Southern as it gets.
Why I love being from and living in the South.
These people kind of drive me nuts.
I live in Hawaii, I get every kind of natural disaster you can think of( although I do have to drive to be in a blizzard, Mauna Kea summit).
Why is so destructive to you guys and you don’t you prepare?
Don’t you examine flood maps, don’t you do due diligence.
Or is it that you are willing to live in dicey areas and expect everyone else to CYA’s?
That is the most likely story.
It was all good. We were in our prime.
Young men off base in a POV. The guy driving was from WV and two of us from TN and one from TX.
There was no reporting in and out much. No recording of what we we did outside of Gods book.
That was the USA of old. (not that long ago)
The town did give me a certificate which was nice.
Normally I’d say they would never blame the sleepy one for anything, but in the last month he’s stepped on his own d*ck so often they may have to break down and admit his failure just a little.
CC
He is a scapegoat.
The left will do everything they can get away with while he holds the title.
He has no clue.
It looks like people are going to be caught in their cars by the storm surge and going to die.
Being trapped on an interstate under those conditions will not end well.
