My wife and I took my grandmother back there in 1978, while it was still a communist country. She had been away for 53 years, and hadn't even written a letter. She left a well-to-do family that had fallen on hard times. Even though she graduated number one in her "gymnasium" (high school), her father was too proud to let her work, so she took off for greener pastures. She had hoped to come to the U.S., but there was a two-year waiting period, so she ended up in Canada instead. By the time we went to Romania she could proudly tell people that she owned her own home and car, and lived independently.
I would love to visit there again. Nowadays, it may be a freer country than the U.S.A under Biden.
