I work 12 hour days M-F, today I plan on hiking 7 miles with my new puppy, then tearing down my deck on my cottage. I’m alive and doing well. Do what you want, no one cares.

Support for a position by stating “Three doctors told me it...” as a justification for something is what is known as an “appeal to authority” by someone arguing a point.

Instead of arguing something on its own merits and points, the point is made by saying that someone who is an ostensible authority supports their position.

Climate alarmists have been the most egregious adherents of this tactic for the last three decades.

Physicians get a lot of training and know a lot of things about the function of the human body most people don’t. But it has been my experience that Physicians can be among the most Leftist in their views (not all of course) and no matter how intelligent a Leftist is, that intelligence, is like the gallon of ultra-pure clean water ruined by a drop of sewage by that drop of Leftism as referenced in my tagline. Not all physicians are that way, of course.

Thomas Sowell brilliantly points out that because a person is an expert on one thing, that does not make them an expert on other things, but we constantly assume just that. Stephen Hawking was a brilliant physicist, but that doesn’t make him a brilliant cook. Or car mechanic. Or vaccine expert.

Same for Neurologists, Pathologists, or Oncologists.

If three Oncologists tell me that a certain treatment for cancer is valid, I am going to accept that opinion. If three Neurologists tell me that a glioblastoma is a very bad thing and chances of survival are poor, I accept that as an authoritative position.

But if three practitioners of Cardiology tell me some treatment for a certain brain cancer is best, I am going to reserve judgement.

The distance between specialties such as Immunology and Cardiology is wide enough to be significant.

One might give more weight to their opinions because they know more about specialized mechanisms and disease states in the human body, but unless a physician is an immunologist or perhaps an Infectious Disease specialist, their views must be accepted with the same grain of salt (albeit a smaller one) than the views of car mechanics.

Or posters on Free Republic.
