But he was a Republican; McAuliffe is a Democrat. Do not forget how in 2002 the New Jersey Supreme Court allowed the Democrats to change their candidate for Senate from Torricelli to Lautenberg even though the state law said that they could not do so after a certain deadline. Democrats do not have to follow the law.
