Sad...
When I was 8 I had sense enough to keep guns high enough toddlers could not reach them...it should be automatic with a grown mother.
I’ve seen people kid proof a house when grandkids were coming...I’ve done it too...nothing that resembles a gun or knife is less than 6 feet off the floor, with the exception of the kitchen cutlery, safely in a drawer...

My dad was a US Army veteran, Korea.
He gave me a .22 rifle when I was 8. He trapped a rabbit and told me to shoot it. I did. He then explained that dead is dead. Good training.
I still have that rifle.
