2016 article from the NYT. It was all a lie.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/07/04/ashraf-ghani-afghanistans-theorist-in-chief

“Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, wakes up before five every morning and reads for two or three hours. He makes his way daily through an inch-thick stack of official documents. He reads proposals by applicants competing for the job of mayor of Herat and chooses the winner. He reads presentations by forty-four city engineers for improvements to Greater Kabul. He has been known to write his own talking points and do his own research on upcoming visitors. “

I met Asraf Ghani in 2003 when he was Minister of Finance and years later when he was President of Kabul Universty. The article told how aloof he was from the other ministers and had no relational skills. I was told the same thing by a key minister in 2003.

When he became President I figured he’d fail as he is an intellectual leader but not a leader of men. John Maxwell describes 5 levels of leadership. Ghani operated on the lowest positional level and some level 3, production (results). He failed at level 2, permission (relationships), level 4 people development, and was far from pinnacle (respect).

I always thought Hanif Atmar (mentioned in the article), would have been a better President. That said, bring President of Afghanistan is a thankless impossible job.
