In some areas of the US, it needs to be replaced by an OEM original part, or it will not pass inspection and the car cannot be registered.

So, the government doesn’t do much to prevent the crime, but it makes the victim pay dearly for it.

But the cost report was from the Seattle area where the OEM requirement is not in effect. But repair shops probably claim it is.
