VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Valparaiso University announced Tuesday that it has adopted the Beacons as its new team name, replacing the Crusaders, a term school officials dropped this year after saying it had been embraced by hate groups.

The university's president, José D. Padilla, said the private Lutheran school's new nickname "directly connects to the University's motto, 'In Thy Light We See Light,' and represents the Valparaiso University community in many ways."

Crusaders was adoptd by hate groups? I have heard other schools dropped that name because it is offensive to Muslims.

According to AP (the article):

That decision came after a decades-long debate that has recently intensified because groups such as the Ku Klux Klan began using the words and symbols of the Crusades, which were a series of bloody religious wars starting in the 11th century between Christians and Muslims.

I usually hate this stuff, but reading the university motto, ‘In Thy Light We See Light,’ it seems like “Beacons” is perfect, and unique. I vote yes.

Well, that’s a little better than what my alma mater did. It turned Crusaders into Thunder. Ugh. In my heart I’m still a proud Crusader.

In the spirit of Martin Luther: “There I stood, but then the bullies looked at me so I bailed.”

A few years ago, the college where I worked made the very same name change; from Crusaders to Beacons.

bloody religious wars starting in the 11th century between Christians and Muslims

That of course is a lie, as that was when the Europeans started to get serious and fight back against the Jihadi's, who started the wars in the 8th century. This short video gives and excellent presentation:

Jihad vs. Crusades.

Now the’re gonna get observant muslims and jews angry. Naming their mascot after banned food is offensive.

Huh?
Oh, never mind.

It will be amusing when the Wokestopo starts to pressure the Holy Cross Crusaders to change their monicker - the name of the college is even more provocative to a certain demographic than is the nickname.

And as an aside, apparently a few years ago Holy Cross abandoned their mascot under pressure - it used to be a knight with a lance. The Furman Paladins better start checking their back; ditto the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and a few others.
