My late father-in-law was a Marine who had been wounded on Iwo Jima. While he was recuperating the bombs were dropped, he came home like a million other guys, met my late mother-in-law, got married and had four daughters, one of whom is my wife.

Those bombs weren’t a ‘’war crime’’.

They ended a war we wanted no part of, bought to us by a fanatical enemy who, after having been bombed nearly into the Stone Age refused to surrender.

"Hirohito appointed a Peace Faction in January 1944, based of navy and army staff studies determining Japan could wage war successfully only until June-July 1943. "

1943? I assume that is a typo.

The Peace Faction was appointed in January 1944. The reason being, Japan was now half a year past the June-July 1943 point which an earlier study had indicated was the maximum time frame that Japan could wage war successfully before American industrial capacity was sufficient to turn the tide against Japan. Admiral Yamamoto was against starting a war with the US because he knew that once America ramped up her industrial might then Japan could never hope to match her production level. By January 1944 Japan could feel the ring of allied might starting to tighten the noose. So both those dates in the original post are correct.

I notice the folks opposed to the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki were not in the invasion forces in the Pacific. It’s later day revisionist, liberal historians who question the dropping of the bombs. And I betcha donuts they never served a day.

From the text the mention of “James Bryant Conant, president of Harvard and chairman of the National Defense Research Committee ...” is noteworthy,

Conant was an exceptional person. He was a brilliant chemist who became the first president of Harvard not from the “community”. It’s not generally known that he headed the bomb project.

With only two bombs of different design and the material for possibly a third, the performance of the first two wasn’t 100% certain. That means a demonstration was out of the question.

Conant’s granddaughter wrote an excellent biography of the man if you’re interested.

“It’s “alone” spelled backwards”

Yep, that’s exactly what I remember about his mom’s name. It’s stuck with me for decades.

Yes, it was mom’s name. But the unique thing is it is “alone” spelled backwards.

He was insubordinate to three different presidents: Hoover, Roosevelt, and and Truman.

Remember, under Hoover he decide to attack the Bonus Marcher, i.e. U.S. veterans of World War II. He disobeyed Hoover, and then blamed him. More on WWII later.

Ok. He was an arrogant pain in the rear, that is for sure. I always thought the Army’s island-hopping strategy in the Pacific made more sense than the very costly Navy / Marine strategy such as seen at Iwo Jima. But how accurate that is, IDK.

Yup. Regretfully I never served but my admiration for those who do and did including members of my family, who have passed on, is second to none.

The world likes to think we’re a war mongering people but we’re not.

Americans are not afraid of a fight but war like is not who we really are.

No sane person or nation goes around looking to wage war.

I agree with # 44, but I was discussing why the USA dropped the Bomb which would have long term implications.

History can be confusing, I know, but VJ Day far predated his going rogue. And LeMay never went rogue.

MacArthur was, as he often was, right on this.

“We dropped the bomb not to get Japan to surrender, but as a warning to the Soviets. Of course, we didn’t realize that by then the Russians had already stolen all the information they needed to make their own bomb.”

Nope, FDR gave him that data and the yellowcake needed to produce same during WWII.

Read “American Betrayal” by D. West for the details.

Again, history can be confusing but the Bonus Army was made up of Worl War ONE veterans, not WWII.

“He was insubordinate to three different presidents: Hoover, Roosevelt, and and Truman.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_summary_of_Douglas_MacArthur#Orders,_decorations_and_medals

And Truman appointed him to be SCAP leading the post-war Japanese reconstruction and to lead the UN Effort in Korwa. Why? Because he was an inspired and inspiring military leader.

Correct, that was a typo. Obviously so, since it happened well before the U.S. entered World War II.

So you are saying that Truman did know about the atomic bomb before and that the Manhattan Project didn’t have many spies? Because you are 100% wrong on that, Soviet archives proved what we already knew.
