DEWITT, N.Y. — The actions of a DeWitt police officer who punched a woman during an arrest at the East Syracuse Walmart were justified, department officials announced at a news conference Thursday.
The department began an internal investigation after the July 4 incident, where two women were arrested. During the investigation, Officer Rory Spain was placed on paid administrative leave.
A social media post showed video of the July 4 incident, when officers responded to a six-person fight at the store. Police said that 22-year-old Tajenik Byrd, of Syracuse, and 26-year-old Tyreana Edmonds, of Albany, attacked store employees and sprayed mace into a crowd that included children.
The video showed Edmonds attempting to bite Officer Spain as he and other officers tried to break up the fight and escort the suspects outside. Then, the video showed Spain hitting Edmonds on the side of the neck. Chief Chase Bilodeau said officers are trained to target this area, known as the brachial plexus nerve cluster, because it can stun a person with less likelihood of causing serious injury to both the suspect and the officer.
Spain's actions were deemed justified because he was defending himself, Chief Bilodeau said. Investigators also determined that Spain did not use any more physical force once he was no longer in physical danger.
Three officers were involved, but Spain was the only officer who was placed on leave. He has been on the force since 2018 and will undergo training before he returns to work.
Edmonds faced multiple charges, including attempted assault, resisting arrest, having a stun gun. Byrd faced child endangerment charges, along with assault and resisting arrest.

My home town.
“...Tajenik Byrd, and Tyreana Edmonds...”
Uh-huh.
Would these police officers have arrested another man who was defending himself against a woman for the same reason?
It’s a jungle out there. Treat them as such.
With a name like “Tyreana”, it has to be black. (With apologies to Smuckers).
“Attempted assault?”
So many of these attacks happen in stores, are they sure these are not a diversion for something else going on in the store?
Some of the blacks now, no matter they have done, will resist the police in hopes of getting a sympathetic jury to award them millions when they sue the police.
Good. She deserved a couple more attitude adjustments.
Why do certain folk create such disturbances?
