If you’re reading this, you will awake one morning to no power. No tv, no radio - most radio stations rely upon power to get their feed to the transmitter at the tower - and certainly no internet. If you’re lucky, your car still works. But unless you have a ham radio or know someone who does, you’re totally in the dark.
If you live in the city, chaos will be the 2nd reveal after the absence of information. Looting, fires, violence and death in the streets will certainly follow perpetual gridlock.
If the power doesn’t come back on in 2-3 days, food will be gone. In all likelihood your water is off and the realization of a very, very dire situation hits home. If you’re lucky, you are not on the front lines of urban violence or, for that matter, on foot after abandoning your gridlocked vehicle with nowhere to go, few supplies and predators at every block.
That scenario alone should shock a person into taking the first steps to being ready for a surety, whether caused by natural event, war or other action at the hands of humans.

***There are localized SHTF incidents such as fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, or riots — remember Reginald Denny?
It makes sense to be prepared for both. Much more likely to be localized shtf. The BIG Event, the superduper SHTF will likely be inescapable — nukular war, anti-Christ coming, Yellowstone Caldera Blows, asteroid hit.
