There is a survivalist type guy on the internet called “Selco” - from Serbia(?). He talked about how it was a slow decline. But at the end if you crossed the street to try to find firewood (electricity was all out) you would get shot at.
He said for the longest time he (and others) just took the decay and violence in stride. “It will get better...”
Then one day there was a small riot and some people looting a store. The police showed up. The police entered the store, and came out with arm-loads of stuff, put them in the squad car and drove off. That’s when he knew it wouldn’t get better.
Hard to imagine that here, but the way the police are treated in the major cities, it could happen. Especially if inflation gets so high, supplies so low, etc. Keeping your children from starving will test the strongest morals.
