As Sunisa Lee celebrates her gold medal win in the women's gymnastics all-around final today, the Team USA star has become an instant household name — but who is the 18-year-old gymnast who took the top spot in her first-ever Olympics Games?
Sunisa, who hails from Minnesota, is the daughter of Laotian refugees who fled the country in the wake of the Vietnam War — and she's also the first Hmong-American to represent the United States at the Olympics.
Her road to the Games wasn't an easy one, with the star persevering through personal tragedy after her father was paralyzed in a freak accident in 2019 that left him in a wheelchair.

Simone???
Simone who?????
Exactly. I have NO doubt that the Hmong’s detested the Commies and our media can’t have that. Oh no no no
Which is why I haven't watched CNN or MSNBC since spring 2016. 😒
I had a Hmong classmate in college and all three of her brothers served in the US Marines. That family embraced the US and every opportunity it had given them.
I have to admit that until this week I barely knew who Simone Biles was, and then all of sudden this young woman is being hailed as some kind of courageous heroine ... for backing out of competition? “Oh, she’s so brave to put her mental health first. Such courage to admit that she’s under a lot of stress.”
What the ... ? This is the freakin’ Olympics. Every single athlete there is under “stress.” Only in a culture of snowflakes and naval-gazers is it somehow heroic to back out of even trying. The worst aspect of that is that some other gymnast didn’t get to make the trip to Tokyo because Biles was wasting a spot of the team.
Did Japan do DNA testing for the games?
That’s great!!! She’s a real American hero. No excuses. She just got it done.
My huncher tells me that Biles’ dropout of her commitment to compete for the United States was just a cute way of taking a knee. I hope my huncher is wrong.
Many of these refugees know what they fled was horrible and respect the freedoms we have in America. I hope her family is one of these.
Is she a lezbo.
Her prom looks like it.
I don’t remember Simone being like that.
I have no issue with her withdrawing, BEFORE the trials and w/o all the attention getting pomp and circumstance and drama - akin to the attention getting knee, look at me. She could have her coach issue a statement and she could stick around and support her team.
Very cool.
I am really happy for her, looking at the pictures of the family and friends gathered to watch brought tears of joy to my eyes.
In the Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino, his neighbors were Hmong.
The original story actually took place in Minneapolis. Clint changed it to Detroit because it went better with his character being a retired Ford assembly line worker.
In the movie, the girl next door tells Clint’s character that the Hmong were hill people that had been on our side during the Vietnam War.
GET OFF OF MY LAWN
“a cute way of taking a knee”
I’ve subscribed to that theory from the minute I heard it.
In this environment of blacks hating America it wouldn’t surprise me st all.
Same thing with the basketball team losing.
Racist. The judges didn’t want a black woman to win gold
I wouldn’t read too much into that photo. It is very common nowadays for girls without boyfriends to go to prom together, usually as part of a larger friend group. It doesn’t mean anything in terms of their sexual preferences.
