The PCR RT test does not identify which variant of Covid is present in a sample. The PCR RT test is being replaced on Dec 31, 2021 by any of a handful of other FDA approved tests. PCR is not a total failure, but it is inferior to most of the molecular assay tests on the FDA approved list. Note PCR RT is the norm now because it is inexpensive and all it has is Emergency Use authorization. That authorization is being pulled Dec 31.

Identifying variants is a separate procedure called genomic sequencing. This is done in a separate lab. It has no connection with the PCR RT test.
