Other questions, that I believe are worse; How do you know you need to create a new test to detect a new variant? (is every test being put through some AI imaging system to detect some ‘change’?) Once detected, how is a new test “magically” immediately available? How is this possible if COVID tests can’t differentiate between COVID and the flu? Does each sample go through the different tests?
And - how is any of this possible when the PCR tests were being amplified to the point of providing high levels of false positives?

You don't need a new test to determine it's some variant of SARS CoV-2.
Some percentage of positive samples are further genetically sequenced to monitor spread of mutations.
It's the same sequencing technology and you just compare the outputs to see where the sample virus sits in the mutation tree.
