I think I figured it out.

Republicans and conservatives view "audits" as a matter of good business, a routine, a double-check of facts and a means of transparency.

Democrat leftists view an audit as a weapon or means of punishment. Leftists in the IRS use audits as cudgels against conservatives (think TEA Party audits). Audits that question election results are viewed as an attack (because they themselves use audits as weapons), not as a means to show transparency because they need the opacity to hide the fraud.
