The "Serendipity Sapphire" weighs 2.5 million carats.
A massive sapphire cluster worth as much as $100 million has been unearthed by workers digging a well in the backyard of a Sri Lankan home, authorities said.
“The person who was digging the well alerted us about some rare stones. Later we stumbled upon this huge specimen,” the owner, who only wanted to be identified by his last name Gamage, told the outlet.
“I have never seen such a large specimen before. This was probably formed around 400 million years ago,” Dr. Gamini Zoysa, a top gemmologist, told the BBC.
“Given the size and its value, we think it will interest private collectors or museums.”

I’m familiar with them and they would be a nice find and addition to my fossil collection.
But this neck of the woods has been massively glaciated and is mostly glacial till.
—”’Serendip’”
The fun fact of the day!
Thanks.
Serendib, also spelled Serendip, Arabic Sarandīb, name for the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The name, Arabic in origin, was recorded in use at least as early as ad 361 and for a time gained considerable currency in the West.
“Found” in the yard of a third generation gem trader, what are the chances of that. We are not getting a straight story here, I think. This thing came from elsewhere.
I wonder if one could make a laser rod with sapphire, and what the properties would be...

Already here. Been here for quite a while. If you honestly believe you "own" your property, you're sadly mistaken. You only take care of the property for the government.
Just looked it up. Guess they do.
I’d have to go with a “Yes”, since rubies and sapphires are the same stone, with different contaminants.
Read that during covid lockdown in the UK, a family was making a garden in their backyard and dug up a part of a royal crown. They believe it to be the centerpiece part of Henry VIII crown. The value was estimated at 2M£.
Big Girls Don’t Cry. Unless they have to haul this around.
It’s crushing his good tire
Beverly Hills is the place to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly."
Thank goodness they are wearing their masks.
They will probably get china flu from it and call it the Sapphire flu.
Yep. That’s a honker.
Stacy Abrams could probably manage it.

They are waiting to see if the property owner has any ownership of the mineral rights.
Hope Sri Lanka recognizes “mineral” rights.
Lol!

One is barefoot and no safety shoes in the bunch!
