Empty seats, zero atmosphere, diminished team numbers, local protests and a world distracted by coronavirus all combined to deliver just 16.7 million viewers for NBC’s four-hour long broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony on Friday. It was the smallest U.S. television audience for the event in the past 33 years.
Keen Olympic watchers would have to go back to the opening ceremony for the 1988 Seoul Games, which attracted 22.7 million TV viewers, to see numbers like it.
It was also lower than the 1992 Barcelona Games, when 21.6 million people tuned in, according to Nielsen data supplied to Reuters, although some critics could see what lay ahead before one athlete had entered the arena for the march past.
As Breitbart News reported, corporate media has been quick to trash the opener as a somber production performed to a “sea of empty seats,” a striking departure from the vibrancy and life that featured Olympics’ past.
According to the New York Times, the performances themselves aimed to “divert the message of the Games away from the pandemic and scandals and toward the more anodyne themes of peace and global harmony.”
“But that messaging may have little resonance with the Japanese public, as coronavirus infections in Tokyo have risen to a six-month high and the domestic vaccine rollout has proceeded slowly,” the Times reported.
During quieter moments in the show however, “protesters outside the stadium could be heard yelling ‘Stop the Olympics” through bullhorns,’” the paper reported.

I think they mean lowest ratings since 1980 when the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics and NBC cancelled their broadcasts.
One of our Freepers lives in Japan lefty-lie-spy’, and he reports everyone there HATES the Olympics.

Yep, that's what I'm hearing too.
And the final number is not in yet. As the already low viewership sinks to yet another even more abysmal level, the endorsements and the sponsorships will continue to dry up, in an ever-tightening death spiral. Olympics as we know it could become a mere memory, as distant from us as the ancient games once held in Greece.
WOKE pandering has major consequences.
Couldn’t happen to a better network than NBC.
The Olympics that should have never been held.
As for Beijing as the next stop on the political gauntlet the games have become.. or are becoming.
New events anyone?
Tiddlywinks, Team TIcTacToe.. Poem recitation??
That my personal experience. I don’t know anyone that cares about it, but I don’t know everyone. My gut feeling is that no one gives a damn, backed up by friends, family, coworkers, community observations.
I have noticed a trend. American teams faltering left and right.
Hint: go woke, lose focus, get arses kicked.
Viva La France beating our men’s China owned, woke basketball team.
Bob Costas is saddened.....
Not just a US thing....even in Germany, public viewership just isn’t there. No one really cares.
Part of this blame goes to Covid....public is out and taking advantage of their free time.
It;s a shame that a few woke assletes ruin it for everyone
They still don’t get the fact that half the country has turned the MSN off completely. Not watching it at all so they don’t have a clue about ratings for the Olympics, the Jan 6th witch hunt, latest CDC guidelines or any of the other leftists misinformation and propaganda. It’s like they are crying alone in the great outdoors and no one can hear them. It’s actually quite a beautiful thing!
It’s hard to get into it, with no crowds. Also knowing that more and more you here of athletes being taken out because of testing for COVID, and pretty much most of the medals should come with asterisks.
The BLM and Woke Olympics will be little noticed. Of course, make sure that you don’t miss the skateboard competition. Almost as good as the NBA finals.
Now how did they get anyone for the skateboard competition, I thought they were testing for marijuana.
Did China let the Wuhan virus out in 2019-20, to ruin the Tokyo Games in 2021??? LOL
So NBC you insult me and my core beliefs, you support Marxist groups and you want me to support you? Enjoy your failed life.
Talked with my stepdaughter earlier today (well, was 20:00 Sunday there), and she said among her circle of friends, no one is watching Olympics live, but was keeping informed via newscasts. She went to a LaLaport (a “chain” of pretty good sized shopping venues) Saturday to watch a movie. I asked her how busy the “mall” was and she said pretty busy.
She said it seems pretty even on if Japanese wanted the Olympics to be held / not held, based on news reports.
